Our Grey Lynn childcare centre features purpose-built classrooms that are modern and calm, and well-resourced with a diverse range of Montessori materials. The children have opportunities to engage with purposeful work from the practical life, sensorial, language, maths and culture areas, where important cognitive, social and emotional skills are developing. They can choose to work either individually or in small groups.
The five key areas of learning in a Montessori environment are:
We provide activities at our Grey Lynn childcare centre that encourage independence and help children to develop self-help skills, to build concentration span, to develop co-ordination, self-regulation and confidence, enabling them to embrace functional aspects and social norms of everyday life to fit into community life. Grace and courtesy lessons are delivered where manners and virtues are incorporated for character development.
Manipulation of specifically designed materials with isolated concept help children to refine their perception of patterns and sequence, as well as to awaken their five senses – sight (visual), touch (tactile), smell (olfactory), taste (gustatory), sound (auditory), stereo gnostic (kinaesthetic). With repetition, these materials enable children to progressively build their cognitive skills including attention, memory, comparing, judging and thinking.
Enriching literacy experiences are provided with specific hands-on tactile materials to extend on their vocabulary. The materials are designed and introduced to the children in a sequential way. This enables the children to easily grasp and comprehend the learning of phonics which brings together skills to encode and then decode sounds, progressing to writing and reading skills when they are ready.
The materials in this area allows the children to internalise math skills by using hands on concrete materials and progressing at their own pace toward abstract concepts. The early math activities and equipment help children grasp the concept of quantity and the symbols 1-10 before they progress to learning larger number symbols. The approach to introducing math concepts is logical, clear and extremely effective.
Materials in this area have a specific focus which enables children to explore and relate to the natural and physical worlds around them. It encompasses activities such as
- Geography (e.g. continents, landforms, earth layers, solar system)
- Zoology (e.g. classification, physiology of animals)
- Botany (e.g. ecology, classification, physiology of plants)
This curriculum area facilitates opportunities for children to develop a strong sense of belonging and engage in celebrating the diverse country that we live in.
At Grey Lynn Montessori, we are passionate about establishing strong connections with our local community. We are incredibly lucky to have Grey Lynn Primary School right next door to our childcare centre, our playground looks directly into their field and we have a shared gate that connects us to the school. Our teachers use this as great opportunity to take the children over for regular excursions. We often attend their assemblies, explore their playgrounds and get to know the teachers there. This is an amazing experience for our older tamariki to be part of as it helps with transition to any school, and feeling a sense of belonging, and pride in our community.
The location of our centre means we are within walking distance to Auckland Zoo and MOTAT. Our daycare team have built great relationships with both The Zoo and MOTAT, meaning we take the children here for regular excursions. Our visits provide exciting learning opportunities for our children, with so much to look at and see. If you would like to know more about how our excursions work or how you can attend, please speak any of our teachers to find out more.
