Our Childcare Programme
We offer an all day Montessori Curriculum at Grey Lynn Montessori childcare centre in Grey Lynn. Our routines start with children being welcomed into our childcare centre and being able to freely choose from various curriculum areas. All our materials are displayed on low shelves that are easily accessible for children, empowering them to follow their innate interests. Children can engage in activities independently, 1-1 with childcare teachers, with a peer or in small groups within an uninterrupted block of time. This supports and strengthens their ability to concentrate, make their own discoveries and master skills at their own pace.
Harmonious integration of Indoor/Outdoor flow
Grey Lynn Montessori childcare centre advocates the freedom of accessibility between indoor and outdoor spaces throughout the day following children’s interests.
Events and Opportunities for Parent Involvement
We have an open-door policy which enables the community and you to actively contribute to the success of our pre-school programme. Your input and involvement are of paramount importance to us and will be greatly appreciated.
In addition, you are welcome to be part of:
Excursions, parent information evenings, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Grandparents day celebrations, concerts, family picnics and festive cultural celebrations.
Our qualified Grey Lynn childcare teachers offer small group sessions throughout the day, where children are taught grace and courtesy lessons which help them to understand and work collaboratively together in their community. We also offer a wide variety of extra-curricular preschool activities such as baking, science, yoga, music and movement, dance, drama, poetry, ball games, gardening and visual arts and crafts, both 1-1 and in small groups.
The outdoor programme provides a fine balance of experiences in Montessori activities, gross motor activities and gardening.
A wide variety of Montessori materials and activities displayed on the shelves on the deck at our preschool are readily available for children who prefer to work on the deck.
A variety of equipment is available for children to focus on their physical education and practice their gross motor skills. A few examples of these include balancing beams, mini trampoline, moon hoppers, basketball and football nets, obstacle courses, sandpit and water trough, and group games facilitated by teachers.
We have a garden with seasonal plants and flowers at our childcare centre in Grey Lynn that is always inviting and children love to help with watering as well as tend to the compost bin.
Our Rooms at Grey Lynn Montessori
Rangitoto Room | 2-3 Years
Transition to Montessori
We have carefully and purposefully set up our Rangitoto classroom to be able to cater to the needs of toddlers. We have got nappy changing and sleeping facilities available for these care routines to be able to take place in a room with a smaller group size and high child to teacher ratios (1:5)
In our transition to Montessori classroom, our children learn basic Montessori concepts such as learning to look after our belongings, packing things away once they are finished exploring, so that it is ready for the next person to use.
The materials and resources in this space are carefully selected and presented to meet the developmental stage of the children in the room, where they are able to freely explore materials with the support and guidance of attentive teachers.
Our great ratios enable Montessori teaching at this age and stage as well as being able to carry out care routines. As children spend time in this transition to Montessori class room, they gain confidence and self help skills that help prepare them for our full emersion Montessori – transition to school class.
Waiheke Room | 3-6 Years
Transition to School
In our Waiheke classroom, we have a well set up Montessori environment that is specifically prepared to support the learning of our older children. Children start in this space once they are less likely to need toileting support, sleep time and are more independent. This means that our two Montessori trained teachers, can spend regular dedicated 1:1 time with each child to extend their learning across the full curriculum offered.
Children are presented scientifically designed materials and resources that extend their learning through hands on exploration of abstract concepts and foster a deep love of learning that helps prepare children for lifelong learning.
Here at Grey Lynn Montessori childcare, we use an awesome app called Storypark, which allows whānau to follow their child’s early learning journey and to ensure you don’t miss out on important centre communications.
Photos, videos and audio capture your child’s learning at our centre, so you never miss a treasured moment again. You and your family can also feel more engaged in your child’s development, and you decide who you would like to invite to experience your childs learning journey with you. A perfect way to share those special moments with loved ones down the line or overseas.
Although we love to use Storypark as an online platform to communicate with parents, we also use paper portfolios for each child.
Children enjoy finding their paper portfolio and reflecting on their past activities at the child care centre. It is a fantastic way for children to engage in self-recognition and reflect on their personal development, as well as being a treasured keepsake for their 21st Birthday!
